Archbishop José H. Gomez has declared a Jubilee Year in honor of the 250th anniversary of the founding of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, the first outpost of Christian faith in what is now Los Angeles.

The providential timing of this milestone offers us a unique moment of grace by which to revive the life of faith in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles through a fresh proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the raising up of a new generation of missionary disciples for our time.

The celebration will begin with an outdoor prayer service with Archbishop José H. Gomez, civic leaders, and representatives of the first people of the land on Wednesday, September 8 at 7 p.m. at Mission San Gabriel. Then, 22 designated pilgrimage sites across the Archdiocese (St. Mary Magdalen Chapel, Camarillo being one of them) will host 40 Hours of Eucharistic Adoration from 6 p.m. on September 9 through 10 a.m. on September 11 to pray in anticipation of the opening of the “Forward in Mission” Jubilee Year.

Archbishop Gomez will solemnly inaugurate the Jubilee with Mass and the opening of the Holy Door at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on September 11 at 11 a.m. The following day, Sunday, September 12, the 22 pilgrimage sites will open their Holy Doors, through which pilgrims can pass throughout the year to obtain a plenary indulgence. All are invited to participate in these special events!

In addition, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will host 250 Years of Mission, a year-long exhibition of photos and artifacts showcasing the rich legacy of Catholic faith in Los Angeles over the decades.
