Synod 2021-2023
Our Holy Father Pope Francis has invited the Catholic Church to embark on a journey together. Through listening and discernment rooted in the Holy Spirit, the entire people of God will be called to contribute to a process by which the Church deepens in understanding of Her mission and looks toward the future.
A Synod, which is the process by which the Church will begin this important work is not just a convening of Bishops reflecting on a particular topic and advising the Pope. A Synod is a journey of discernment, in which the people of God are called to pray and reflect upon the Holy Spirit’s will for the Church. Through our listening and our sharing, we will seek to understand what the Holy Spirit’s will is for the topic being discussed – and thus, for the Church.
For the 2023 Ordinary Synod of Bishops, that topic is synodality. Simply put, synodality is discerning how the Spirit is moving through and with the Body of Christ, so that we may continue to fulfill our mission to evangelize in the world.

Nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, ha invitado a la Iglesia Católica a emprender un viaje juntos. A través de la escucha y el discernimiento enraizados en el Espíritu Santo, todo el pueblo de Dios será llamado a contribuir a un proceso en el que la Iglesia profundice en la comprensión de su misión y mire hacia el futuro.
Un Sínodo, que es el proceso por el cual la Iglesia comenzará este importante trabajo, no es solo una convocatoria de obispos que reflexionan sobre un tema en particular y asesoran al Papa. Un Sínodo es un camino de discernimiento, en el que el pueblo de Dios está llamado a orar y reflexionar sobre la voluntad del Espíritu Santo para la Iglesia. A través de nuestra escucha y nuestro compartir, buscaremos comprender cuál es la voluntad del Espíritu Santo para el tema que se está discutiendo y, por lo tanto, para la Iglesia.
Para el Sínodo Ordinario de Obispos de 2023, ese tema es la sinodalidad. En pocas palabras, la sinodalidad es discernir cómo el Espíritu se mueve a través y con el Cuerpo de Cristo, para que podamos continuar cumpliendo nuestra misión de evangelizar en el mundo.

¿Qué es un sínodo mundial?
Un sínodo es una asamblea de obispos que se reúnen para discutir y decidir sobre asuntos de la vida y misión de la Iglesia. Sin embargo, durante este sínodo, el Papa Francisco ha invitado a todo el Pueblo de Dios a participar. Este es un momento histórico en la Iglesia porque es inusual que el Papa Francisco pida a los laicos (¡ustedes!) que lideren este proceso sinodal.

¿A dónde van mis aportes?
Sus aportes serán escritos de forma anónima por el tomador de notas en su grupo pequeño. Las notas de cada grupo pequeño se reunirán, serán sintetizadas, y se enviarán a la Arquidiócesis en un informe de toda la parroquia. Al final del periodo de recoger, los informes de todas las parroquias se reunirán, enviarán a los obispos norteamericanos, y luego a Roma, donde las voces de los católicos del mundo informarán al Papa Francisco.

Thank you for your participation in the Global Synod at St. Mary Magdalen Parish!
What is a global synod? A synod is an assembly of people who gather to discuss and decide on matters in the Church’s life and mission. Ordinarily, this is a gathering of bishops, but Pope Francis has invited all the People of God all over the world to participate. This is a historical moment in the Church because it is unusual for Pope Francis to ask the laity (all of us) to lead this synod process.

What happens to the things I say?
Your input will be written down anonymously by the notetaker in your small group. The notes from every small group will be gathered, synthesized, and sent to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in a parish-wide report. At the end of the local collection period, all parishes’ notes will be collected, sent to the North American bishops, and then to Rome, where the voices of the world’s Catholics will inform Pope Francis.
